Just a quick overview, big thanks to Team Tesco for organising a superb evening in the Company of Chief winemaker for Casillero del Diablo, Marcelo Papa, held at the brilliant Hawkesmoor Guildhall, London.
Great to meet Graham, Nick and ‘Knackered Mother’ Helen again, not forgetting members of the Community, Saunderss, Petit Verdot, (always good to meet up with these guys !) MLB, rcoyle and jackieang (nice to put a face to new members). We were greeted with a lovely glass of CdD Brut Reserva, made from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir (aromatic, Crisp green apples, minerally). Mingling, before taking our seats, everybody seemed to be getting on (glass or two of the Brut helped !) I had a brief chat with Marcelo before the meal and I found him very approachable, knowledgable and friendly and obviously had a love of what he does.
Eventually we were seated and the wine and food began, with Marcelo giving a brief introduction which included introducing us to the wines that would be paired with the meal.
First wines poured were the Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc, paired with Salmon and Spicy Pork belly staters. The Viognier seemed to be the favourite and got very positive remarks from all, for me it was the best white of the night.
As we all eat and drank and drank more the noise level from the conversations around the room noticeably went up a notch, with everyone looking as though they were really enjoying themselves.
For Mains we were served Lobster and steak (Porterhouse prime rib and Chateubriand) with a selection of sides. these were paired with Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere. For me and a lot of others judging by a show of hands the Carmenere was the star.During the evening we were shown a brief Mission Impossible trailer (sorry I mean a new advert for the Cassillero wines, very tense and slick, to be screened on our TV’s soon) nice little interlude.
As Pudding arrived ( Stick toffee pudding, sorbet and cheese) guests drifted off (trains to catch etc), all looking very content (again, maybe something to do with the wine)
All in all a fantastic, enjoyable and informative evening, nothing like getting a winemakers perspective on this wonderful world of wine, Marcelo was the perfect host and his easy going style reflective of the night where everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
Once again Tesco have organised another great event .
